Putting Sin to Death...by The Spirit
Romans 8:12-13
So much of our lives are driven by doubt and fear-and when you add in our spiritual amnesia and forgetfulness-we need to be reminded often. In Romans 8 the Apostle Paul is going to great lengths to assure us of God's faithfulness to His promises found in the gospel. Along with these reminders Paul has to remind us of the proper response of those who have received grace. Last week he told us that the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us-and this week he will remind us of our obligation now that we have the Spirit. Christians who stand in Grace-who no longer are under condemnation-are now called to live in light of our new nature...but you CANNOT do it in your own strength. Thankfully-God has provided all that we need. See you Sunday! Romans 8:12-13. This Sunday will will also be celebrating the Sacrament of Communion. Take some time to read I Cor. 11:23-34 as a way of preparing your heart and self-examination. Here is an article by Tim Challies that I have also found helpful on the subject. https://www.challies.com/articles/preparation-for-communion/

Jesus Has Come Bringing Good News
Luke 4:16-21
During Advent we looked at the Songs of the First Christmas. This Sunday we will see Jesus--the One who was to come--announcing his mission and purpose for coming. When he announced his mission using a passage from Isaiah they marveled and spoke well of him--but before he was done speaking they wanted to throw him off a cliff. Join us Sunday as we hear the good news that Jesus comes to bring--and may we be more moved to join him in his kingdom work than those first hearers were.

The Songs of the First Christmas--Angel's Song
Luke 2:8-14
This week we continue our series on "The Songs of the First Christmas". We will look at the Song of the Angels! In light of such a BIG announcement one might expect a little more visible reveal. I think we will see that the place God chooses and the people He chooses to reveal this news are just one more way of pointing to THE Good News...A Savior is born! Read Luke 2:1-20 before Sunday. In all of your preparation for Christmas--may we be preparing ourselves for Christ--for his glorious return--and for the opportunity to gather at His table this coming Lord's Day.

The Songs of The First Christmas--Zechariah's Song
Luke 1:67-79
This Sunday is the second Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time intended to help us to remember the first coming of Christ and to consider and anticipate his second coming. As we look around--we see so many reminders of the brokenness in our world--politically, economically, socially, racially, and even spiritually. Advent and moving into Christmas provides us with a time to be reminded that, "this is not all there is"! There is a new day coming when Jesus will come and make all things right. Justice will reign and we will see the new heavens and a new earth. Advent and Christmas are a time to reflect on our readiness and God's faithfulness. During Advent at CrossPointe we are looking at The Songs of the First Christmas. This week our attention will be on the second song found in Luke's Gospel--the song often referred to as "The Benedictus"--the song of Zechariah the father of John the Baptist. He has been waiting to sing this song. He has had 9 months to prepare. 9 long quiet months. Join us Sunday as we hear the Good News that he declares and the reminder of God's working...even through those who have doubted.

Changed by Grace
Rom 6:1-14
Jesus died for our sins. While that statement is true-it is only part of the story. This Sunday we will look at Romans 6:1-14 and we will be reminded that because of Jesus death-and resurrection-we are dead to sin. Does that mean we will never be tempted? No. Does that mean we will never sin...again? No. But it does mean that sin is no longer our master-Jesus is! We will see some of the implications of Jesus resurrection and how we should live in light of what He has done.

Rescued from Ruin to Reign
Romans 5:12-21
This Sunday we will look at Romans 5:12-21. In this passage Paul will compare and contrast two "Adams". The first Adam of eden and the fall, and the second Adam of Heaven and the cross-Jesus Christ. There are some similarities in them-but the differences are far greater. In one we have death and in the other we find life-life eternal-If we have been justified by faith. Join us as we continue our study in Romans.

Rejoicing in Hope...and In Suffering
Romans 5:1-11
Paul has gone to great lengths to remind us that we have been justified-declared right with God-through faith alone. As we come to chapter 5 Paul will begin explaining to us what it looks like to "Live" under grace-how our begin justified actually brings us into a new way of living. It is much more than getting a ticket to heaven and waiting around until we die or He returns. There is kingdom living to be done...but it will not all be easy. But the good news is-there is HOPE!

Justification by Faith-Just Ask Abraham...
Romans 4:1-12
I once heard a pastor comment-Where two are more are gathered...conflict soon happens. It is true in government, in our homes, and certainly it can happen in church. The Apostle Paul is writing to the church in Rome to help them understand not only the gospel of grace alone by faith alone as it pertains to their salvation-but also the implications of a new way of life in community. This Sunday in chapter 4 Paul will help us understand that Salvation by Grace through Faith is not a new idea-in fact it is a couple thousand years old!

By Grace...Through Faith...ALONE!
Romans 3:21-31
As a friend reminded me recently, "Do not try to make a savior out of your morality. You can never be righteous enough. That office belongs to Christ alone." That is what Paul has been telling the Romans in the first 3 chapters of his letter. But...But this week marks a key transition in the letter...and it begins with the word "But." But Now! Join us as we look at the importance of the transition that these two words mark. Being right with God is possible-you just can't do it for yourself. Trust me-this is really good news. Read Roman 3:21-31 in preparation for Sunday morning.

RELIGIOUS PEOPLE NEED JESUS
Romans 2:17-29
Paul says it is not the hearers of the law but the doers of the law who are God's people. The only problem is, none of us on our own are doers of the law in a way that would please God. Luckily as we repent (of both sin and self righteousness) and trust in Jesus, not only do we receive Christ's righteousness, but we receive His Spirit which renews our desires, so that we begin to want to obey God. Join us this week as we consider how religious people need Jesus.

The Powerful Gospel...for Those Who Hate it
Romans 1:18-32
We all worship something. We can't help it. It is the way we were created. But...and it is a big "but"...we have a problem. Our problem arises from the fact that while we all worship-we worship the wrong things. While we often think that our greatest problems are our sinful actions-what we fail to see is that those actions flow from a deeply sinful heart. This coming Sunday we will look at the second half of Paul's letter to the Romans and he traces for us the anatomy of our sin-where it begins and the results. As we move toward this Lord's Day can I invite you to pray for our time together. Pray that the Lord would work in all of our hearts to help us see the sinful patterns that are there and how the gospel is at work to change us. We will be celebrating Holy Communion this week as well-Please Read I Corinthians 11:17-33 as a way of preparing your heart to receive God's Grace in this covenant meal.

GOD, PAUL, and MARRIAGE
Ephesians 5:21-33
This Sunday we will have the privilege of hearing from Rev. Jeff Weir. We will look Ephesians 5:21-33 and the topic of marriage. Please join us as we look to God's Word for reminders about God's design and purpose in marriage.
Upcoming Sermon Series: Next Sunday, Sept. 15th, we will begin a new Sermon Series on Paul's Letter to the Romans. It is his Magnum Opus, if you will, on the topic of God's Grace. We will spend the next year working our way through this letter packed with wonderful theology that leads to lives marked by worship and gospel engagement-for the glory of God and the good of the world in which we live.

FROM COMPASSION TO PRAYER
Matthew 9:35-38
How would our lives be changed if we began to look at those around us-particularly those who don't live and believe like we do-and rather than being frustrated with them, their attitudes, and their sin-we began to pray for them. This Sunday we will look at one snapshot in the life of Jesus where see his heart on full display-and it is convicting-but wonderfully so. Please make plans to join us on Sunday as we begin to consider a new season of ministry at CrossPointe and as we consider how God might want to use us to impact our homes, our neighborhoods, our places or work, our city, and the world. For all of these things-we need the heart of Jesus.

A Lightweight King
Daniel: Living as Faithful Strangers
Daniel 5:17-30
George Santayana, the Harvard professor, is quoted as saying: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." In Daniel 5 we see a king who knows what has taken place in those before him-but he refuses to pay attention-and his demise is sure. His live serves as a warning to us all-or at least it should. Sunday we will look at the interpretation of King Belshazzar's dream-and we will consider its meaning in our lives. No, the dream isn't our dream-but we must heed its warning.

The Writing's On the Wall
Daniel: Living as Faithful Strangers
Daniel 5:1-16
Are you like me and you can look back over your life and see people that God has used to point you to Christ. I can look back almost 40 years since coming to faith in Christ and there are so many people. Many of them aren't around anymore-but their faithful labor those years ago is still paying spiritual dividends. God's Kindness leads us to repentance. He worked with Nebuchadnezzar for years. But we cannot mistake his patience for his approval for the ways we might be living. This Sunday we will hear about a new king-who takes arrogance and pride to a new level. We will see How God works and how God uses his faithful servants-sometimes long after they are forgotten and feel of no use. Join us a we see the dangers of arrogance-the intervening hand of God-and the way God uses his faithful saints. Be encouraged-God is still at work!

I'm (NOT) the King of the World!
Daniel: Living as Faithful Strangers
Daniel 4:19-37
One of the reasons that God has given us the Scriptures is to warn us of what life looks like when we reject Him as King. Thankfully we serve a God who is merciful, especially when we persist in our foolishness. We will finish Chapter 4 of Daniel this week as we look again at the life of King Nebuchadnezzar. He has been warned-and yet he has rejected these warning-and yet again we observe that it is God's Kindness that leads us to repentance-but sometimes that Kindness doesn't feel like kindness.

You Shall Not be Burned
After we have been brought from death to life through faith in Jesus, the shape of the Christian life looks like obedience to God and rebellion against our old self, Satan, and any other thing in this world that would have us give it our first allegiance. Join us this Sunday as we continue looking at Daniel, and as we consider the cost, the benefit, and the witness that follow this obedience to God and rebellion against idolatry.
Kingdoms Rise and Fall...All But One
Daniel: Living as Faithful Strangers
Daniel 2:25-49
The King had a dream and he was shaken. He couldn't remember the dream and wanted to know what it meant. When his normal magicians couldn't tell him-he ordered them to be killed. Daniel, one of the young Israelite captives, believed that God could deliver them. He prayed-along with his friends-and God answered their prayers. We will see another contrast this week-the contrast between the Kingdoms of Self and the Kingdom of God. They are vastly different. Join us-and prepare your heart by asking the Lord to show you the ways that you have been seeking and building the Kingdom of Self and neglecting His Kingdom. See you Sunday!
